In Game 1 we were the superior counter-puncher.  In game 2 were meticulous, executed flawlessly and did what we do best – deliver a game to pen with a lead.  In game 3, we were just too much for the poor dodgers to deal with.  Too much offense, too much pitching…just too much.  The Dodgers were over-matched and out played and they appeared to know it.  They suffered the final indignity in the 5th, briefly tasting the lead for the first time in 21 innings only to have it snatched back from them the following frame…this time for good.

The Mets took one step closer to the promised land on Saturday night and did so with authority.  They ride a 7 game win streak into Shea tonight where they face the Cardinals in Game 1 of the NLCS.    They also face the next in what has been a non-stop set of challenges they have been presented with this season – the potential loss of Cliff Floyd.

If Cliffy can’t play, it doesn’t promise to effect the starting lineup too badly.  Endy Chavez is a superior fielder and arguably a bigger offensive contributor of late.   It does weaken the bench however and leave them with a choice of DeFelice, Ricky Ledee or Lastings Milledge to fill the roster spot.

There are about 600 good reasons not to promote Ledee, and 585 of them have to do with how badly he sucked this year.  I know they are hesitant to promote Milledge but I think he is the best choice.  They are unlikely to need him in the field, where he is a potential liability.  The can go to Tucker or Woodward before Milledge would have to pick up a glove.   Milledge while far from ready to meet the Queen, has fantastic bat speed, a growing ability to hit the ball to the opposite field and would likely benefit greatly from the experience of helping this team at a time when they can really use it.  Give the Kid a chance.  This is why you held on to him when every GM on the planet wanted this kid a few months ago.  It may be early and he may be raw but he has tremendous raw talent and we are presented with the need to go with a plan B.  Let him do what you drafted him to do and let Ledee and DeFelice do what they do best…..sit quietly somewhere where they can not drag down our team batting average every time they go to the plate.

One series down and two to go.  Pujols, Carpenter and the ghost of Terry Pendleton come to Shea tonight.  Time to go back to work boys.
