As if on script, Guillermo Mota blew a 2 run lead in the bottom of the 8th last night.  Everyone in the Stadium, and the Millions at home knew it was going to happen.  I bet Mota knew it was gonna happen.  What was he doing out there with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 8th in a close game against Atlanta during a pennant race?

Throughout my history of being a Met fan, they have always had one guy in the bullpen that the Met manager has had some delusional belief in.  As is the case with Mota, no matter how poorly the reliever did, and despite him blowing game after game for us, Davey Johnson or Jeff Torborg or Art Howe would keep putting him out there for another beating.  It started with Doug Sisk.  He would get shellacked in a key situation but he'd be right back out there the next day.  After a few more pastings, he'd get moved down to "long relief" but after one good appearance when the Mets wee up by 10, he'd be right back out there in a key situation, only to blow it again.  It was as if the manager and the fans were watching 2 different guys. Other Torture devices have been John Franco (the later years), Mel Rojas, Armando Benitez and most recently Mike Stanton.

2006 and2007 have been the first years in memory when I haven't had to fear who is in the pen warming up.  Now, Mota is a walking time bomb.  Bring him in and wait 5 minutes for the explosion.  Hopefully with the battle for potential post-season roster spots they know enough to leave him behind.
